FAQs Frequently Asked Questions

Q. I've heard that the federal government provides grants (free money) to people who are either starting or growing their business.  Is this true?

A. Not true!   This  myth ranks right up there with the alligators in the sewers of New York City.  It is spread by infomercials, websites and hotel meetings that all have one thing in common... you have to pay them to find the so called  grant opportunities.  I have never seen an instance of anyone getting a grant during my eight years with the Center. Here's what the U.S. Government has to say about the subject on its official website for business, www.business.gov

We've all seen the headlines: "Millions in free government money for your business" Late-night infomercials, reference guides and websites promote the availability of grant money to entrepreneurs for starting and expanding businesses.  Sound too goo to be true?  It is!  The truth is that federal and state governments do not provide grants for starting and expanding small businesses.  Howver the U.S. government does offer a wide variety of low-interest loans and venture capital financing programs to help entrepreneurs start and grow their businesses"
