COME JOIN US FOR OUR 10TH ANNIVERSARY

The Lowell Small Business Assistance Center will be celebrating its tenth year of providing small business assistance to Lowell and surrounding communities on Thursday, May 7th from 8:30am to 10:30am at the Federal Building on the MCC campus in Lowell.

“Anniversaries are a natural point to stop for a moment and think about what has been achieved and the work that remains to be done. It’s also a time to say thank you to the people and organizations who made the Center and its’ mission possible” said Russ Smith, the Center’s Executive Director.

The Center was founded in late 1998 by Community Teamwork, Inc., Middlesex Community College, and the City of Lowell in response to an Urban Land Institute study recommendation that a small business center would serve as a catalyst for the creation of new businesses and contribute to the area’s economic vitality.

The Center works with entrepreneurs and existing businesses offering a rich mix services to support both would-be entrepreneurs and established businesses including entrepreneurial training programs, seminars, and one-on-one counseling on business concept, business plans, and specific issues and problems.  Some of the businesses include: Downtown Danceware, Wells Emporium, C’est, and Groovy Grub.

Since its founding the Center has served over 2,800 clients and provided nearly 11,400 services.  It has helped start over 300 businesses that created over 340 jobs in Greater Lowell.  Many of the businesses in the downtown started with the assistance of the Center.  Over the years the Center has been recognized in numerous studies as a “Best Practice” and has received a number of awards for its innovation.  There are small business centers in Ababa Addis, Ethiopia and in St. Louis, Senegal that were established with the assistance of the Center.  In 2003 the Center was cited as the “Best example of sustainable community development” in the city’s annual Community Block Development Grant Report to the Department of Housing and Urban Development.

“The Center is a great example of what can happen when a society has the foresight and wisdom to invest in its people.” Russ said.
